Botox® and Fillers: What to Expect

Actual Patient

Botox® is a household brand name that many people recognize as a facial injection to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. There are many options when it comes to facial injections. When considering facial injections you will eventually have to ask yourself the question, “Is Botox® or a filler right for me?”

What Exactly is Botox?

Though many people have heard of Botox®, you may be unsure of exactly what it entails. Botox® is an injected treatment that is administered through a thin, fine needle into the desired location, typically the face. Botox® works by temporarily freezing the muscles that usually perform a movement that creates lines and wrinkles in the face.

By doing this, the muscles no longer contract in the same way, allowing the skin to smooth. Botox® is a great option for people with wrinkles and other lines, like crow’s feet, in the face. Botox® results last for about six months, and the treatment requires no recovery time with minimal side effects such as bruising for a couple days.

What about Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are different from Botox® in that they work by plumping up the desired area instead of paralyzing the muscles that are located there. When thinking about Botox® vs. dermal fillers remember that lines at rest need a filler and lines of expression need Botox®.

Dermal fillers are also injected into the treatment area via a fine needle. However, depending on the type/brand, dermal fillers are more versatile in terms of where they can be used. Dermal fillers can be used for wrinkles, thin lips, forehead grooves, hollow cheeks, and several other facial lines. The results of dermal fillers depend on the filler chosen but can be expected to last one to two years with a recovery time of only a couple days at a maximum.
