What Is Facial Fat Grafting?
Facial fat grafting, also known as facial fat transfer, is the surgical procedure in which fat is taken from one part of the body and injected into the face, thereby smoothing out wrinkles and plumping up the skin again. Facial fat grafting is a relatively new advance in plastic surgery based on an old idea. The practice of taking fat from one part of the body and using it as a filler in another part dates all the way back to 1893, though the procedure as we know it today did not gain popularity until liposuction was developed in the 1980s. Though facial fat grafting may not be as well-known a technique as other cosmetic skin tightening procedures, many plastic surgeons believe it to be much safer and more effective. Facial fat grafting is most commonly used to help correct facial scarring, a concavity in the cheeks and face, sagging skin around the jawline, add fullness to the lips, and in conjunction with facelift surgery.
Benefits of Facial Fat Grafting
Many patients who have undergone facial fat grafting rave about their smoother skin and more natural-looking profile. In addition, they have reported enjoying the following benefits and results of the procedure:
- Improved self-esteem and renewed confidence
- Improved skin texture and shape
- Happiness with the renewed fullness of their treated facial feature
Preparing for Facial Fat Grafting
Facial fat grafting takes an average of one to two hours and is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the needs of the patient. Dr. Eberle will start by marking the areas on the body where the fat is to be removed as well as those parts of the face where it will be injected. A small syringe is used to remove and inject this body fat. Typically, the points of injection on the face are very small, and there is no need for sutures.Sutures may be used to help speed the healing process, however.
How is Facial Fat Grafting Performed?
Facial fat grafting is a quick, procedure with minimal downtime performed in the comfort of our practice or in the operating room if needed. Most often, fat cells are harvested from the upper thigh or stomach area and are removed using a specialized cannula that is placed under the skin. The fat is then injected into the proper area of the face resulting in renewed smoothness, a more youthful appearance, and fewer wrinkles. Some patients may require additional treatments depending on their desired level of results. Dr. Eberle will meet with you prior to beginning treatment to identify and discuss your desires and goals and use those to map out your individual course of treatment.
Facial Fat Grafting Recovery
Some discomfort and slight bruising around the treated areas is to be expected for the first few days following treatment. Pain medicine and ice packs can be used to minimize any swelling or bruising and lessen any pain. You may resume your daily activities within two weeks following treatment. However, you should consult with Dr. Eberle before beginning any exercise following your procedure.
Is Facial Fat Grafting Right for Me?
The ideal patient for facial fat grafting is any adult between the ages of 30 and 70 who is experiencing loose facial skin, facial concavity, sagging, loss of volume, or other signs of aging which would be improved by adding more volume to the face. Results are best achieved when facial fat grafting is performed in conjunction with an eye lift, brow lift, or another type of facial lift. At your initial consultation, Dr. Eberle will determine if you are a good candidate for facial fat grafting.
How Much Does Facial Fat Grafting Cost?
The price of facial fat grafting varies depending on the extent of treatment needed, as well as other possible factors. Financing is available.
