For many Fort Lauderdale and Broward County women, intimacy may be dampened by feeling self-conscious about the appearance of our private parts. For women with irregular or oversized labia, intimacy can prove to be embarrassing and unpleasant. Double board-certified plastic surgeon Nathan Eberle, M.D., D.D.S., F.A.C.S. performs labiaplasty on women in Broward County and Fort Lauderdale at the Weston Center for Plastic Surgery.

Often referred to as vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty is a highly sensitive and individualized genital cosmetic surgery that reconstructs the shape or size of the inner or outer labia. While our bodies are all naturally different, some women find that having asymmetrical or disproportionate labia can lead to self-consciousness and reduced quality of life. Other women find that childbirth has affected the shape of their sexual organs, or that their labia is uncomfortable or disruptive to daily activity. Labiaplasty can help correct the appearance of your most private parts by trimming the excess and unwanted skin and tissue away, yielding a neater, smoother appearance. If you have feelings of discomfort or embarrassment because of the appearance of your sexual organs, a labiaplasty can leave you feeling rejuvenated, confident, and sexy!

WHAT IS LABIAPLASTY?

Labiaplasty, also known as vaginal rejuvenation, is a form of female genital cosmetic surgery performed to change the size or shape of the labia. Many women are self-conscious about their large or asymmetricallabia, or have experienced changes in genital appearance as a result of childbirth, aging or other causes. During labiaplasty surgery, the labia are trimmed or reshaped to change their appearance.

BENEFITS OF LABIAPLASTY

For many women, intimacy and sex can present difficulties due to embarrassing feelings of inferiority as a result of large or asymmetrical labia. For some, the labia is so large that it actually interferes with sexual pleasure. Labiaplasty can restore a woman’s sense of confidence by correcting the labia to a neater and more trimmed appearance, reducing embarrassment and discomfort.

IS LABIAPLASTY RIGHT FOR ME?

You may be a good candidate for this surgery if you are not happy with the look of your labia. Many women seeking labiaplasty surgery say they are too embarrassed to allow a sexual partner to see their genital area. Some women feel that their labia protrudes too far, while others report that their large labia causes irritation when tight pants are worn. Ideal candidates are adult women in good overall health.

HOW INVOLVED IS THE LABIAPLASTY PROCEDURE?

Labiaplasty procedures are performed with general anesthesia. Large or asymmetrical vaginal lips can be trimmed with a scalpel. The natural tissues can be contoured to change the overall appearance of the labia. Once the labia have been reshaped according to the patient’s wishes, the incisions are closed with dissolving sutures. This surgical process usually takes one to two hours.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY AFTER VAGINAL REJUVENATION?

Following vaginal rejuvenation, most women are able to return to work within a week. The full recovery process, however, takes about a month. Strenuous activities or heavy lifting must be avoided during this time. You may also find it more comfortable to sit on a donut cushion during this time, as pressure placed directly on the labia can be painful. Common side effects include soreness, tenderness, bruising, and swelling. You will need to wear a pad for about a week due to post-surgery bleeding. Women undergoing this procedure must abstain from sexual contact and avoid using tampons for at least one month to allow the area time to heal.

HOW MUCH DOES VAGINAL REJUVENATION COST?

The cost of labiaplasty can vary depending on the extent of surgical work required. Financing is available.
